Groups Donate Thousands of Pounds of Food to Help Those in Need
LAFAYETTE, Calif. (January 17, 2012) – In the spirit of giving, Girl and Boy Scout troops, Boys & Girls clubs, student councils and classes nationwide donated almost 15,000 pounds of food to food banks over the 2011 holiday season. The groups were participating in Lindsay Olives' Santa Cause, a contest that called on kids to help other kids who are hungry over the holiday season.
As part of the Santa Cause holiday program, Lindsay Olives pledged to donate one can of olives for each can purchased over the holiday season. The olive company will donate 4,800 cans to food banks across the U.S.
"The Santa Cause effort allowed us to really give back in a meaningful way," said Jennifer Fuchs, consumer marketing manager for Lindsay Olives. "We loved seeing the kids get involved and give back, too. All of the groups worked very hard to collect food, and it made a huge difference to their local food banks."
A Girl Scout Troop from Gridley, Calif. donated the highest percentage of food items to their local food closet, the Presbyterian Community food Closet. They will be awarded $3,000 to be used for the group purchase of equipment, supplies or to fund a special program.
A Girl Scout Cadette Troop from Bethesda, Md., donated the second highest percentage of food items, and Dent Elementary Student Council of Escalon, Calif., came in third.
According to news sources, in 2011 40% of federal funds were cut from food programs across the country (food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries). Food banks continue to be in need and Lindsay Olives' program is dedicated to making a difference.
